Artwork at the Alcron Hotel, Prague

The Radisson Blu Alcron Hotel in Prague is one of the cities Art Deco delights. Originally opened in 1932 the avant-garde accommodation was meticulously restored preserving as much of the 1930’s character as possible including the chandeliers, Italian marble and creamy milk glass.

The hotel is located in the heart of Prague and is just steps away from some of the cities other architectural delights such as Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and of course all of the Old Town Square. Further out you can walk down pretty much any road and see a fantastic building of one sort or another, the city really is full of superb architecture. Like most places the religious buildings are all worth visiting, including the Jubilee Synagogue and St Vitus Cathedral. On the more modern side of things the ‘Dancing House’ is a great example of deconstructivist (or new-baroque) architecture.

The Deco, Northampton

The Deco in Northampton is an amazing looking Art Deco building that was built in a Streamline Moderne style in 1936 and was originally a Savoy cinema. It was re-opened in 2004 by a charity group called the Jesus Army after a refurbishment and is now used as a centre for “worship, friendship and help for all”. It now caters for corporate events, social events such as weddings and it is also host to theatrical productions.

The Deco was designed by William Riddel Glen who was the house architect of the ABC (Associated British Cinemas), it was a popular cinema and even held a Beatles gig in 1963. In the 1980’s it was renamed as the Cannon and finally closed it’s doors (as a cinema) in 1995 after showing Pulp Fiction, Terminal Velocity and Just Cause.

It is one of the most fascinating buildings for anyone to visit and if you are planning a trip and staying in a Northampton hotel, organising an evenings entertainment to see a theatre production is a must.

Cavan Cathedral

Cavan Cathedral or to give it, it’s more official title of The cathedral of Saint Patrick and Saint Felim is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the Irish town of Cavan. The current building started construction in 1938 and was completed in 1942, it was seen over by W.H Byrne & Son architects and cost £209,000 to complete.

Cavan is the county town of County Cavan, it lies near the border to Northern Island and is on the main road (the N3) which links Dublin in the south with Enniskillen, Ballyshannon and Donegal Town in the north. Staying in Cavan can be a good base for exploring Ireland if you don’t want to make a base in the bigger cities and as it is a main road through town, it has easy links to places for day trips.

Dunnottar Castle, Aberdeenshire

Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress located in the north-east of Scotland in Aberdeenshire. The site is believed to have been an fortress in the early Dark Ages but most of the surviving buildings are largely from the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle’s beautiful location is one of it’s main highlights and also one of the main reasons it was built as sitting high up on the cliffs it overlooks the shipping lanes to northern Scotland and has a very easily controllable access by land.

The castle is a huge tourist attraction for Scotland and is visited annually by hundreds of thousands of tourists and is also included in the Castle Trail a tour popular for those staying in Aberdeen and surrounding areas, that takes you around 16 of Scotlands most famous fortifications and castles.
