The Citadel in Alexandria was built in 1480 by Sultan Qaitbay, it overlooks the city and the Mediterranean Sea and was originally built to protect Alexandria from attacks by crusaders coming from the sea. The Citadel is now a maritime museum, that has exhibits showing off the history of the area.
It is worth staying in Alexandria for a holiday, there is a whole wealth of history to visit. The amazing Roman amphitheatre is one of the the oldest attractions for the city, it was built in 2nd century AD and was originally used in Ptolemaic times and could seat 800 spectators.
