An Aerial view of Shannon in County Clare,...

An Aerial view of Shannon in County Clare, Ireland.
Shannon is a small town that was only very recently built from reclaimed marshland in the 1960’s, it was named after the nearby river and was only given town status in 1982.
The town was originally meant to be a small residential area for the workers of Shannon airport and Shannon Free Zone industrial estate but the population grew rapidly and it has needed a lot of redevelopment to cope with it.
Shannon Airport is one of Ireland’s three primary airports (along with Dublin and Cork) so it made sense to build nearby for workers to live and build airport hotels for travellers. Shannon airport was used as a stopover for American flights in the 40’s and 50’s and had strong military connections.
